Dear Dean Hazeltine,

Happy 75th Birthday! It has been over 30 years since I was in your classes and had the honor to be one of your TA's. Even after all this time what still impresses me is how much you cared about each and every student and the encouragement you gave to us. I was "snowed" any number of times, but you patiently worked me through the issues and were able to get the point you were trying to make through to me. In what at times seemed like an impersonal university, you made me feel important and special; I know your friendship and teaching has had much to do with my success in my career and my life.

I think I may have been in one of your first EN 9 classes and was one of your first TAs, and I recall how exciting it was to be in a class that was a bit out of the norm of the other classes and how much I enjoyed the free flow of thoughts and ideas. I don't recall that anyone ever gave a wrong answer; it was just that some answers were better than others. I missed my share of classes at Brown but never one of yours.

What is especially gratifying for me is that my son Peter has been able to have you as a professor and as his Freshman Faculty Advisor. I know he couldn't be in better hands.

Thank you for all you have done for me and the thousands of students whom you have touched through your career. You are truly a wonderful and special person and a Brown treasure. Best wishes to you and your family on your birthday.

Sincerely yours,

Jerry "Ace" Gilligan
